Spring showers often wash trash into our waterways and trails. You may notice increased trash after a storm or a windy day so its a great time to cleanup your favorite trail and park.
Keep in mind that spring also brings out our favorite (or not so favorite) critters and bugs so be safe and keep an eye out for snakes and don't forget your bug spray.
Some things to keep in mind:
- Bring grabbers and plenty of trash bags. I have even used large kitchen tongs instead of buying a trash grabber so feel free to use what you have. Having something to grab trash can help protect you from snakes and other unwanted critters or poison ivy/oak and can lengthen the time you spend outside by limiting constantly bending over to pick up trash.
- Don't wander to far off trail, there is plenty of trash to get near the trail or sidewalk (Leave No Trace principle 2)
- Wear appropriate shoes and clothing: if you will be in a more wooded area, wear full coverage shoes and pants to protect from snakes, bugs and poison ivy
- Use bug spray even if you don't see many bugs yet
- Drink plenty of water
